I’m a software enginneer (NOC 2173) with 1 year experience and a BS both in the US.

I’m not a US citizen and my stay in the US is expiring. I would like to live in Canada so I’ve been applying for Canadian jobs online (skipping Montreal cause they require french I think?).

People are telling me about this 2-week-processing visa and touting it as much easier than the LMIA work permit.
What’s the catch?? How long does it last? Does it help me in my PR application?

Through the Global Talent Stream the employer can get you a LMIA faster, because he doesn't have to advertise the job opening for x months. But he will have to do other things to satisfy the government (like training Canadian citizens or residents). My employer hired a lawyer for that, and I recommend that you ask your potential employer to do the same.

That being said, first you have to find an employer that wants you enough to go through the process. I'm a developer also, and although there are plenty of job openings for developers, not many employers hire foreigners without permit.

Good luck
