Hi,

My girlfriend is planning to travel to Canada under the extended family reunification program on July 1. She was previously approved for this and spent a few weeks in Canada in Dec/Jan, but we need to reapply given that the we're past the 6 month expiry.

She will be submitting her express entry application as soon as she's able to arrange to write the language exams, but the application is unlikely to be ready before Sept 1, earliest. We're trying to figure out the best way to manage her/our time in Canada in the months ahead and have a few questions:

1) Assuming she's able to get to Canada as planned, how are her days allowed in Canada calculated? Are the 180 days counted on a rolling 12 month period or by calendar year?

2) How likely is it for her to be able to get permission to stay longer than 180 days?

She's a strong candidate for express entry based on our understanding of the points calculation, so we're hopeful that the process can be completed in a reasonable time frame... whatever that means in the current circumstance. The ideal situation would be for her to be able to spend the waiting time with me in Canada (I'm Canadian,) but I have a vacation property in the US that we can use to keep her under 180 days/year as necessary - we can both spend up to 180 days/yr in the US if rules don't change due to covid, etc. She's an EU citizen and is founder of an early stage EU startup, so works remotely. I work remotely also, meaning location is not a huge issue, but we'd prefer to be able to spend as much time in Canada as possible.

Thoughts on the best way to approach this?

Much thanks in advance.
