I've just got engaged to my boyfriend of 3 years who is a Canadian citizen. My question is when we are to be wed (I plan on getting married in Canada) is it true that I need to provide papers (proof of a return flight home and preparation of PR app papers?) when I land and express to the officer in question that I am here in Canada to marry my fiance? I know usually they ask for proof that I have a return ticket because they want to make sure I'm not going there to get married and illegally stay but is there anything else they want proof of? Thanks!

Directly you are not going to get visa for marriage. You have to go on visit for this purpose. and after marriage your husband is going to take care of all the PR matters

I looked at your previous posts and you stated you're American.

First off, don't tell them you plan to get married unless they directly ask you. You're visiting.

If you wish to take proof of the PR application, pay the fees and take a receipt with you. If they press you about why you're in Canada and you tell them you're getting married, you can use that as proof.

Usually, they will want proof you plan to leave. To combat this, buy your ticket from a deals site like Hotwire or Priceline. Or purchase a refundable ticket and return it after you are in Canada. I took two flights into Canada. One flight demanded proof of return ticket before I was allowed to board the plane. The other didn't ask. I don't know why.

If your spouse happens to fly into Canada with you, it's a different story.

Am I not supposed to tell them I am engaged also? I've read stories of people who weren't honest and they got banned from visiting there for a whole year! :( I don't want that to happen.

If you normally refer to your boyfriend as "fiance" then yes. You can even tell the IO you're visiting Canada, so when you get married, you and your husband can pick which country you prefer.

The only time it seems to go bad for 99% of Americans is when they get the IO that wants to be a jerk that day.

I totally agree lol...going home is always pleasant, probably only because I'm going home :p Back to the topic though, this will be the first time I'm going there as his fiance - every other time I say I'm coming to visit my boyfriend ??? I was thinking if I keep saying I'm coming to visit my boyfriend and end up getting married they might find that suspicious (in their minds) and the fact that I would be lying.

I don't think they'd really blink an eye at it. Most people don't refer to their fiance as 'fiance.' They keep with the boyfriend/girlfriend bit.

If you're brave enough to tell them you're visiting your boyfriend, you're doing better than most of us. I was so petrified of customs, I could barely tell them I was visiting a friend. (I have anxiety issues and the IO was totally grumpy.)

Going through customs is always a gamble. I hate questions like "have you been here before?" Like really , just look at my passport lol that's what it's there for. I was so nervous spending the summer because every now and again they send me to immigration and it was on a day where in some booths there wasn't just one IO but TWO!! Luckily I got one that was distracted because of a personal issue.
