Hi Everybody,

I used the search but couldn't find the answers to my questions.

I am a Canadian citizen looking to eventually sponsor my Taiwanese girlfriend.
We are thinking of getting married in BC but I have some questions about obtaining the marriage licence.

1) Do I need her original birth certificate or is a photocopy enough?
2) Do I need to translate her birth certificate from Chinese to English?
3) Do I need proof from Taiwan that she is single? Or is it enough to just declare that she is single?
4) Is a passport generally accepted in lieu of a birth certificate? The website says that it is only accepted in some circumstances.

Thank you very much!
We are just starting the process and the road ahead looks quite daunting.

I really don't have an answer to your questions. BUT when we got our marriage license back then, I used my husband's passport and it was accepted. However, all of his documents are in English so I don't have the info about translation.

3) We didn't have any proof of him being single

Good luck. It doesn't hurt to try. I think I got ours at a service desk in a credit union. Once you got the marriage license, I don't remember the officiant asking for any more ID before/during the wedding.
