I'm wondering if anyone can help me and can give me an advice as to what should I do.
I came to Canada as International Student and now I have completed my studies and got open post graduation work permit for 2 years. (ending in Dec 2014). I will be eligible to apply for PR in December. But I went to India in March and have got engaged. I have also done court marriage. Now I'm wondering what should I do? When I apply for my PR, Should I apply for my wife as well? What are my options? Was this a bad idea to get married before getting my PR here or is this gonna take long time for my wife to come over here. Please help me out as I am very confused. Thanks a million.

If you are on an open work permit and have a skilled job, your wife could actually apply for an open work permit in Canada based on your status. She would still have to prove she will not overstay though.

In any case, since you are now married, you will have to include her on your PR application. You have no choice not do do that now. It should not take longer though because they can do her background checks at the same time they do yours.

Ok. So, after I fill out my application and hers, Immigration Canada will review our documents. Are there any chances they can decline her to come here.? Is it possible?

If they refuse her, they will refuse you too because you are applying now as a couple. The only reasons they could would be not passing background checks, for example criminal past or not passing medicals for example because she has a medical problem deemed too costly for Canadian health care (costs more than $6000 per year) or she has some dangerous highly contagious disease that is dangerous to the Canadian public.

HI Leon,

I have already got CSQ and federal application is in process. Right now, I`m on post graduate work permit .

Could you please tell me: should I wait for my PR before getting married or Should I marry asap?

just checked the website and spouse via processing time is 24 months:( :(

Thanks a lot for your response

1. If you get married pre PR add your spouse to the application then advantage is you get PR visa at the same time.

2. With 1 disadvantage is that if spouse is inadmissible due to health or criminal issues then non of you get PR.

I guess it depends on the nature of your relationship.
