Hi all,

Here is my situation: I am currently living and working in Canada with an IEC granted for one year, until next summer. My fiancee is a Canadian citizen (we met in my home country of Norway), and we are planning on getting married soon. Please note: our marriage would have absolutely nothing to do with my stay in Canada. We are both entirely committed to moving back to Norway in 1,5 years and living there permanently - she is only finishing up her education in Canada, and similarly has no intentions of living in Canada for any longer beyond that (no offense!) . We have zero interest in applying for spousal this or that, not now or down the line.

We would ideally like to get married in a small civil ceremony in a few weeks, but are worried how this might look to CIC when I try to extend my IEC stay next summer for a final year (total of 2 years). Would my changed marital status have any bearing on my eligibility to extend my IEC permit by one year? All other factors (age, financial security, etc) would be as acceptable next year as they were this year, so we are trying to avoid the unpleasant surprise of my permit being 'rejected' solely due to marital status. Would it matter at all, or should we wait until settling in Norway to get married there? The latter is of course an option, but obviously we'd ideally prefer not to have to wait as long! ;D

Please let me know - many thanks!

Hi

Being married won't have any effect on applying for a new IEC permit.
