Getting back months cut from IEC

Hi there,

So I made a silly mistake when entering Canada, in that my IEC exceeded the validity of my passport. I just assumed I'd apply for a new passport whilst I was in Canada but the immigration officer rather aggressively told me that that wasn't 'how things are done in Canada', and cut 7 months off my IEC.

Due to me being out of Canada for 6 months after activating my IEC, due to the cut, it means that there is no chance for me to work a whole year in Canada to gain enough experience to apply for PR.

However, I have applied for an extension with my new passport in order to get back the months that were cut from my Visa. I was just wondering if anyone else had done this with success? And if not, does anyone have any options I could take in order to apply for PR with under a year's experience? Perhaps sponsorship from the company I'm working for?

The CBSA officer was correct - a work permit can only be issued to the expiry date on your passport (same for visitor visas, study permits, etc.). The extension you have applied for should be granted.

Options for applying for PR with less than a full year of paid skilled work experience are very limited.

If you want to work in Canada after your IEC expires, your employer will need to obtain an approved LMIA so that you can switch to a closed work permit. This is a long and expensive process for your employer with no guarantee of approval. Assume it will take 4-6 months to complete.

Oh she definitely was, it was my mistake for not renewing my passport. It's a relief to know my extension is likely to get granted though! Thank you for your reply :)
