Getting a visitor record

I entered Canada in April with my US born child at Thousand Islands. I asked the officer for a proof of entry and he said they don't give anything (even a stamp on the passport) for American passport holders. While applying for my child's PR, it looks like a form IMM1097 (Visitor Record) is needed. I have been calling CBSA, the ports of entry, CBSA immigration, and CIC. All the other people point back to CIC and CIC says I have to apply online. The processing timeline is 6 months! One person suggested visiting an Inland Processing Center of CIC but I can't find any.

Has anyone been in this situation and successfully got a visitor record?

you can not apply for a child's pr through inland.

where do you see it says a visitor's record is required? as a us citizen, the child is not required to have one, nor do i know of it being required to submit an application for pr. it was never required for me to submit one for spousal sponsorship, and the application process seems to be virtually the same. please provide the specific language that makes you assume it is needed...

Thank you very much. I was able to get through to the CIC call center and they told me what you have said:

1) Even though the person (minor child) is in Canada, it will be sent to a different office

2) I saw in the checklist that proof of legal status in Canada is required. The call center person said it is not necessary for this process.

3) I do need the visitor record to apply for OHIP though, so I still will apply for it :) According to the call center person, it takes 27 days for online applications to be processed but right now they are behind by 1 month.

as the child is a visitor, and is visa exempt, you don't need to provide this proof. a copy of the child's passport will prove their status to cic.

i don't think the child will be eligible for OHIP until AFTER pr is granted. Visitors are not eligible for OHIP, and there are very specific rules to qualify. i would suggest reading up on the eligibility information on the service ontario website.

http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/public/publications/ohip/ohip_eligibility.aspx

from the looks of it, the only way a child can get OHIP when they are not a pr or citizen is if "you are the spouse, or dependent child (under 22 years old or 22 years and over if dependent due to a mental or physical disability) of an OHIP-eligible member of the clergy or OHIP-eligible foreign worker;"

A child who is a PR applicant is not eligible for OHIP. You will have to wait until they land as a PR.

So, even the child of a PR is not eligible :-( That explains why my coworkers who are on work visas have their children covered under OHIP but not my son.

nope, not if they are not legally a pr or citizen of canada. the rules for ohip are very specific. as i copied above, it looks like only children of clergy members or foreign workers are eligible for ohip without having to prove PR or citizenship status. otherwise, the person has to wait until PR is granted.
