Getting a Visa at the Border

I have a few questions about flagpoling to activate my Visa...

I am a British citizen who has been living and working in Canada for the last few years or various working holiday visas. My current visa expires this Saturday, and my current employer is sponsoring me. They applied for an A-LMO for me but messed up the application. They have re-applied last Thursday, and understand that Edmonton is currently processing A-LMO applications in 4 days. This means I may or may not recieve my A-LMO before my current visa expires.

If I recieve the A-LMO in time, can I just do a border run to activate my new visa? What supporting documents should I bring? I've read about this, but would be really interested in anyones first-hand experience.

If I don't recieve the A-LMO in time, my employer will put in a visa application for me. I understand this will give me implied status, so that I can carry on living and working in Canada as long as I don't leave the country. In this case, when the A-LMO comes back, am I still able to do a border run? Does this change things at all with regards to flagpoling?

Thanks in advance for any responses!
