Hi,

I am about to submit my citizenship application. I lost my General IELTS test result copy. But I still have a copy of my CAIPS notes which I took during my FSW application process which shows my General IELTS band scores. I have a test result copy of my Academic IELTS. I am planning to send my CAIPS notes and my Academic IELTS as proof of my English Language proficiency. I will send these documents together with a cover letter explaining why I submitted these docs instead of the General IELTS test results copy. I took my General IELTS in 2009 in Saudi Arabia and their website shows not possible to request another copy for tests taken more than 2 years ago.

Any idea if I could do this? Comments are most welcome and will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

You should be able to submit the same IELTS result used to support your language proficiency for your PR application. Just send in a photocopy/scanned copy of your IELTS result. Keep the original with you.

If you took the Academic IELTS then you're OK. This is a more difficult exam than the General test. Academic IELTS is asked for people going to postsecondary schools/universities. A General IELTS is suffice for immigration/citizenship purposes.

As long your test results are within the expected band requirements, expired test results are accepted by CIC.

This is from the CIC website:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/language-step-2.asp

Step 2: Did you immigrate to Canada through a federal immigration program requiring a third-party test result for language ability? (e.g. Federal Skilled Workers, Canadian Experience Class)
If yes: Were the tests and results the following:

Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program General Test (CELPIP-G), not the academic version.
For tests taken after April 1, 2014, you must have achieved a score of 4 or higher (up to 12) in listening and speaking.
For tests taken before April 1, 2014, you must have achieved a score of 2H or higher (i.e., 3L, 3H, 4L, 4H, 5L, or 5H) in listening and speaking.
International English Language Testing System (IELTS), general training and not the academic version. You must have achieved:
4.0 or higher in speaking, and
4.5 or higher in listening. (If the test was done before November 28, 2008, we will accept a 4 or higher.)
Test d’Évaluation de Français (TEF) (French only). We will accept either:
After July 1, 2012, you must have achieved a score of :
B1 or higher (B2, C1 or C2) in listening; and
B1 or higher (B2, C1 or C2) in speaking.
Before July 1, 2012, you must have achieved a score of:
Level 3 or higher (4, 5 or 6) in listening; and
Level 3 or higher (4, 5 or 6) in speaking.
If so, send a copy of your test results with your citizenship application, even if the results have expired.

If you have lost or need a copy of your results, contact the test provider. Do not contact CIC.

I would suggest that you call CIC before sending your application. Many people have had their applications returned for reasons more trivial than this.

I took my IELTS test in 2010 and kept a copy of the official result to myself. The other official copy was sent to CIC for my PR application shortly after the exam. The result was expired by the time I applied for citizenship last year but it was recognized by CIC when I resubmitted a copy for my citizenship application.

My citizenship application was successful without any concerns raised about my expired IELTS test result. I am now Canadian.

The CIC website has a wizard/questionnaire to address your concern and it clearly states that expired test results are acceptable:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/language-step-2.asp

"International English Language Testing System (IELTS), general training and not the academic version. You must have achieved:
4.0 or higher in speaking, and
4.5 or higher in listening. (If the test was done before November 28, 2008, we will accept a 4 or higher.)
...
If so, send a copy of your test results with your citizenship application, even if the results have expired."

Hi Torontonian,

I submitted General IELTS in my PR application. I gave the original copy of the test result to CIC when I applied for PR and kept a photocopy in my file. If I only have the copy now I would submit it even if it is expired already. But I can't find it now.
Having taken both General and Academic IELTS, I agree with you that Academic version is the more difficult one although surprisingly I got the better score. But CIC guidelines as you had posted, mentioned that General IELTS should be submitted and not the ACADEMIC. Did you know of anyone who submitted ACADEMIC version and was able to get it though?

I'm wondering if my CAIPS notes I took during the course of my PR application which shows my GEneral IELTS band score would suffice? I am planning to submit this together with a cover letter and my Academic IELTS. What do you think?

CIC won't accept the academic IELTS. The CIC website says so explicitly and it's easier for all involved (yourself included) if you assume that they mean it and don't bank on them making an exception for you.

You need to get a copy of your old results, rather than essentially asking the CIC to get it for you from their archives or make an individual exception. Instructions for how to order another copy of the general IELTS score are here: http://www.ieltscanada.ca/faq.jsp under How do I order additional TRF's?

If that doesn't work for whatever reason, you should order your physical files from your immigration process through the Privacy Act (it's free that way). Google ATIP CIC or search the website in my signature. They *should* photocopy all your submitted documents, including your general IELTS results, which you could then submit with your citizenship application. Unfortunately in practice the CIC tends to leave out some submitted document copies in the ATIP responses, but it's worth a try and would be cheaper and easier than taking the the test again!

I called CIC and you are correct, they won't accept any other proof except the General IELTS. We had an immigration consultant when we filed our FSW application. I e mailed them hoping they kept a copy of my IELTS. And guess what? They do have it and they e mailed it to me. Problem solved.
The information you gave about ATIP is very helpful to all who are having the same concern as mine. Thank you very much. Response is well appreciated.

I have a copy of my IELTS but I do not have the original .. I worried about asking about original in the interview so I took LINC course to be in safe side

I just hope they wont. If they would, then that is the time that I will sit down for another exam. Original copy is already with CIC's file. So, if you are submitting a photocopy of the result that matches to the original copy which is in their file then in my opinion it is unlikely that they would ask for the original.

But your plan is the best- to be in the safe side.
