Hello EE friends,

Has anyone out there used Rosetta Stone for learning French? My partner and I have been in the pool with 443 points since early this year. We're native English speakers, but I'm hoping we can earn the few extra points we need through a second language score by learning as much French as possible.

Any advice or insight for the French as a second language exam would be greatly appreciated! Having not received a response from our PNP application, we are running out of ways to earn more points!

Well, I haven't tried Rosetta so I can't directly answer this question bit I heard Rosetta is vocabulary heavy. I'm in the exact same situation as you at 448 and by December I'll be at 443. I started french 3 weeks ago by attending classes locally to learn sounds. After which I realised that teacher was really slow so i shifted to self study with books and the Internet.

I saw rocket languages and was told this is better than Rosetta. I used trial license for a week but didn't buy it.

I will recommend you a book Easy French Step by Step. It's mostly grammar and vocabulary and we can work our way through it with repeated readings and exercises till concepts fall into place in our minds. I've read about 75% of this book and it was greatly i useful. Note i can read french newspapers and simple stories but of course with dictionary help.

Thank you for the response! That is good to know. I started using Michel Thomas audio recordings a few weeks ago, which i have found very helpful for picking up french speaking, but does not do much for writing. I'll probably combine it with a few other methods and just try to put in as many study hours as possible!
