I am not sure what deal you have with your attorney, but you pay ONLY attorney fee through credit card and the application fee you send in the form of Cashier's Check or bank draft payable to "Canadian Consulate" but Not in your lawyer's name, however the check goes to him/her who can then send it to the Consulate in Buffalo.
You do not need charge your credit card with BOTH the attorney fee and the application fee for the consulate. Usually most attorneys ask you to pay their fee via credit card (preferable because it is fast) yet not through money order and to send a separate Cash Draft for the consulate in the mail along with all signed forms.
Credit card is safe way of payment, if the services aren't rendered, you may still can deny the charges or at least claim them, with MO, your money is gone.
Good Luck!!
