hi all,

My wife who is the main applicant has declared me and my 2 children from my previous marriage 16 and 20 year as non accompanying. We were asked to fill out form I5406 for additional family information which we did but I do have 2 adult married step children from my late wife that I did not declared since I thought they were not dependent and i know deep down that they will never go to Canada, they're both married and have children and lead comfortable life, Can someone tell me if there is a potential that CIC will find out about my step children? and what would be the outcome
Thanks,

If your wife is the Principal Applicant and you are a dependent, then you are not applying through Family Sponsorship. Post your query in one of the economic immigration sections of the forum.

Your children should have declared your stepchildren on their forms, technically. If they didn't, and you did not either, it is unlikely CIC will find out about them. If they do, you can explain that you did not realize that they had to be listed. This is not a mistake that would lead to a charge of misrepresentation, probably, since it does not really make any difference to the decision.

However, the Additional Family Information form is not just for people who might want to immigrate later. On this form, you are supposed to list everyone they ask about, even if these people are already Canadian citizens, PRs, too old to immigrate as a dependent, etc. It is not like the other forms. But most likely it will end up being OK that you did not follow the instructions exactly.

Thanks Canadianwoman for your help, i am certainly grateful to you. The reason why I did not declare my step children is because i have divorced my wife almost a decade ago so technically they are not my step children anymore and I thought it was irrelevant to put them down on the form , but still they are step brothers and sisters to my children. Anyhow I am not sure why this Canadian immigration process is so twisted as I don't see why I should disclose information of a non dependant family members who are not even going to immigrate to Canada, it is truly daft!

I can see why they might not have to be listed on your form, but they should have been listed on your children's forms, because the form asks for all siblings, including half-siblings and step-siblings. However, I doubt this will be an issue in your application.

CIC wants this information basically just as background info. If someone related to you later applies to immigrate, and the information on the Additional Family Information forms does not match, there will be questions. It is really only an issue for countries where there is a lot of fraud, and countries that present security concerns.
