Hello
I am a naturalized citizen I guess, as I was adopted as a baby by my mother who is a Canadian Citizen. I was granted citizenship immediately and have a citizenship card. Can anyone tell on form 1344 question 7 "if you are a naturalized citizen enter UCI/Client ID. What is this number - the number on my citizenship card?

Thanks

Hiya,

I believe that is the date that you were naturalized. I was in a similar situation and filled the form out by hand because the IMM1344 would not validate if you put asterisks as the guide suggests for unknown dates ( i only knew the year). So I did my form by hand and did not generate bar codes. Now I face an anxious wait hoping that the package won't be returned to me.

What I have done since is contacted my VO (deals with getting your UCI) and citizenship office (deals with the date you were natuarlized). I now have both pieces of information to put into the form to validate. I suggest you do the same so you can complete the form and validate.

Good luck

Your UCI number will look like XXXX-XXXX. I Just looked on my boys citizenship cards and there is no UCI on them. My boys were born in the States Canadian Father... after they were born we applied and received their citizenship cards so I'm assuming what you have is similar to what they have I mean when you adopt a child that child becomes yours. I thought to be naturalized citizen you had to take the test and be sworn in? ok did some digging...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_nationality_law
Canadian citizenship is typically obtained by birth in Canada, birth abroad when at least one parent is a Canadian citizen and was born or naturalized in Canada, or by adoption abroad by at least one Canadian citizen. It can also be granted to a permanent resident who has lived in Canada for 1095 days during the four years prior to applying, can function in the French or English language and passes a Canadian knowledge test. Details and exceptions to these general rules are explained below.
so if this is correct... your are a Canadian citizen, not a naturalized citizen...

If you are in Canada- call the call centre
If you are outside Canada email the visa office dealing with your region ( give them details, passport, DOB, where you were adopted may give them information about the branch that delt with your case)
This will provide your UCI number and is an IMMIGRATION issue.

Email your citizenship office with your citizenship card number and DOB etc... and they will provide the date you were Naturalized or citizen but what you need to fill the form out is the actual date.

Hope that helps

I think I am a citizen by descent since I was adopted as a baby landed and immediately got my citizenship, so that is what I will put on the form

Hi,

You don't have to be "sworn in" and have to take a test to become a naturalized Canadian if you were under 18. I was a child when my parents became Canadian citizens and they were "sworn in" and had to take a test but not me.

So Nigea could be a naturalized citizen rather than by descent but I'm not 100% sure because of the adoption...

@ Nigea: I agree with marcopolocan, you should definitely call the CIC if you're not sure.
I was able to find my UCI number on an old form. (Either the citizenship document that my parents received when I became Canadian or on my CSQ papers since I live in Québec)

There are two choices for adopted parents - citizenship process or immigration process (details http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/adoption/differences.asp)

Since you said you were "granted citizenship immediately and have a citizenship card" it sounds like you were never an immigrant (ie never a PR) unless you were adopted before January 1, 1947. Leave the UCI/Client ID number blank since you never naturalized; you'll be assigned a number during your application.

BTW, if this is correct your children will "not be Canadian if born or adopted outside Canada (unless other parent was born in Canada or immigrated to Canada and then became a citizen) and would need to be sponsored as permanent residents before gaining citizenship." Therefore, if you have children, make sure to add them onto the application with your spouse.
