I was curious about my work permit. I was given a work permit by my employer but recently let go. I have sustained a living here in Canada. My wife is here in Canada she is a Canadian citizen born and raised here in Winnipeg. I am a United States Citizen born and raised in Seattle. I know after 6 months of working I am able to apply for PNP but I only worked for 3 months. My employer didn't give me a legitimate reason but law says that they don't have to give a legitimate reason to terminate. Am I still able to apply for PNP? Am I still allowed to remain in Canada till the duration of my permit? Or do I have to apply for citizenship through marriage? The law I believe has changed for getting citizen through marriage and takes a lot longer now. I am a culinary graduate educated and have the resume to back it up. Please advise. Thank You

You can actually apply as dependent under your wife since she is a Citizen. It will be more easy and fast since you are already here in Canada. Here are the steps and procedure.

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/sponsor/spouse.asp

If you apply for PNP, you will not be qualified since you dont have an employer to back up your economy reason to be come Permanent if you don't have a job with an employer.. You can find an employer who will issue you your work permit with the category your skills is...

Your wife is your best route. But it will be your wife who will process this to sponsor you.. it will not be very difficult to submit.. YOu can just process it online.. Just follow the link above.

Good luck

Thank you for your response. If I go through sponsorship is there anything that I should know about? I do hear that many false marriages have been going on just for residence. But I have dated my wife for 3 years before getting married and we have a legit marriage. should I provide proof of any sort? or be notified of anything before submitting my application?

After being approved how long will it roughly take to be able to work again? do I apply for a work permit? or do I apply for PR? I have heard that when I apply I should also submit a work permit application and PR? please advise thank you.
