Hiya,

As per the recent changes:

The principal worker must have at least 16-months remaining on their work permit at the time when their spouse applies for the OWP
https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/news/notices/changes-open-work-permits-family-members-temporary-residents.html

Please help me to understand what to do:

a. I am a student for 16-month master program, intake is Sep 2024, will complete the degree in Dec 2025. Visa is valid till Oct 2026. Passport is valid till Oct 2026.
b. My spouse's OWP is valid till the same month - Oct 2026.
c. Let's assume that I apply for PGWP after graduation and get it till Oct 2026 (need to extend later, as I am eligible for 3 yrs PGWP)
d. Let's assume that I get Teer 0 or 1 job after the graduation

Questions:

1. When I need to apply for my PGWP extension?
2. My spouse's OWP can only be extended after I receive my PGWP extension because I need to have an PGWP duration of at least 16 months.
3. Will it be the best if I apply PGWP using my new passport?

Thank you!
