No offence but why did you not research this before deciding to immigrate to Canada? The reality is that there is a good chance you will never practice medicine in Canada. The majority of IMGs can’t get licensed. What kind of surgeon are you? You will need to pass 2 licensing exams. They are quite expensive and require quite a lot of preparation. If you pass those licensing exams then you will need to try and enter a residency program to repeat your residency training (5 years plus maybe a fellowship). The problem is that after the Canadian students have picked their residencies and there are not many positions left. The ones that are left are primarily GP, psychiatry and pathology but you are not specialized in any of those. If you are fluent in French your chances may be a bit better. Unfortunately Canada is not a good place to immigrate for most foreign trained doctors.

Hi

Which province are you planning to move to?

I am a doctor from Singapore who migrated to Alberta in 2010 and am now practicing in Calgary.

You should check with the College in the province you are moving to. They might have practice ready streams. You do have to meet their requirements. It helps if you have equivalent certification from developed countries eg MRCS or FRCS.

The other way is to take the MCCEE exam then MCCQE part 1 (for Alberta there is also the NACOSCE and MMI exams) and then apply through CaRMS for a residency position ie train all over again but in Canada. Most international medical graduates (IMGs) would only be able to get residency spots in Family Medicine, Pediatrics, internal medicine, psychiatry, pathology, public health. There are very few spots in General Surgery. All other surgical disciplines usually do not have residency training spots for IMGs.
