Dear forum friends,
I am a student of the Engineering Drafting program in SaskPolytech (SIAST), now have finished year one (two semesters), in September year two will start.
The thing is i feel the job prospect of this program ain't that good, especially for foreign students; from May to August this year is the first co-op working term for us, however, the result didn't turn satisfactory: first, the employers prefer the local WHITE guys, even i have the 2nd-top GPA in the class, still the employers picked white guys first, when they don't have other choice, then they would have to pick a foreign guy - this is not exaggerating, i personally witnessed and experienced many things since the interviews; like my job now, if one of my classmates (local white Canadian) hadn't turned down the offer (this one ain't about drafting and he's not interested in), i wouldn't have got this one, though it has nothing to do with drafting (more related to Civil field, low-tier sort of job, very low, i'd say), i still consider myself a bit lucky, relatively speaking, at least, some tiny money earned, and still, there are about 3 or 4 (or even 5) classmates didn't get anything at all this summer, totally we have 15 students or so at this moment. So in other words, no enough vacancies for us, and Civil students have much bigger employment rate for the co-op than us drafting students.
And SINP seems difficult, it requires the job has to be related to the field of study, take my example, if i still follow the Drafting program i will graduate in May, 2018, first, my age will be close to 40!! second, i feel difficult to get a full time job in NOC2253. If not in 2253, other jobs won't help my SINP, it has to be 2253; if i move to Toronto, where drafting jobs have more vacancies, then i have to take Federal EE process, which my age gets very low points (if i were five years younger i wouldn't worry), the overall situation would still be tricky.
i also have an offer from Civil in SIAST, but which means i'd start from Year One this September, and i'd graduate in December 2018, 8 months later than my current Drafting program. I need to make a decision in one week, shall i move to Civil? or still stay in Drafting? If time allows, frankly speaking, i would move to Red River College in Manitoba, the courses set-up are much better in Civil... and i regret i chose SIAST, the courses ain't good, not much to do with buildings (which my main interest and focus is into), no matter Drafting or the Civil program ...
I wish people from this forum can give me some analyses or advice, whatever, very much obliged.
Thank you.
