Hello people,

I've finally got my PR and am planning to fly soon. I've been buying Canadian Dollars in installments to carry with me (all legit!) and have receipts for them and what not. My question is, has anyone taken a "considerable" amount with them in actual hard cash recently from Mumbai? Did the guys at Indian customs frisk/question you? I'm planning to carry around 40k, please shed light on this!

Cant speak to bringing money from your home country, though I do not think the country of origin will prove a significant issue. It is important that you declare it on entry however.

Here is pretty much all you need to know about bringing money (cash etc) with you into Canada.

Hope this helps.

As per the link declare any cash if 10k or more to CBSA else it could be confiscated,. the whole amount not just anything over 10k and that includes all currency in your possession at the time you land. There is no issue in bringing in that amount greater than 10k as long it is declared and if you have proof of ownership even better.

I think the OP is more concerned about what will happen to him in Mumbai rather than Canada, is that right?

@COPRQuestion: You hit the nail on the head! Seems like no one has a good answer for this :(
I feel your pain, I'm assuming you'd like to avoid the case where the Indian authorities are questions why you have so much cash. I know in the UK you need to declare is and just let them know what it's for an where it comes from.

I'm also assuming that you're slightly concerned that it may be confiscated or you receive a 'fine' for some reason?

Absolutely fine, just take a print out of this page in case some retard at customs troubles you..

https://rbi.org.in/Scripts/FAQView.aspx?Id=29

Look for FAQ 9.

9. How much foreign exchange is available to a person going abroad on emigration?

Person going abroad on emigration can draw foreign exchange upto USD100,000 on self- declaration basis from an authorized dealer in India. This amount is only to meet the incidental expenses in the country of emigration.

100K USD only if you are emigrating or going for employment purposes. Govt understands that these are normally long term stays and people may need more funds to arrange housing, education for children, etc etc.
