I was looking for flights, most cheaper ones go through U.S. I normally need a visa for US, having a canada visa before landing allows me to transit U.S without an USA transit visa?

You will still need a US visa to enter into the US ... better for you to just land directly in Canada ... makes life way much easier!

Good luck

of course I don't know your specific situation/country, but I don't know that you need to ever actually 'enter' the US if you are connecting from one international flight to another.

But different countries and different airports have different policies - maybe call the airline to ask if you will need a visa for the US in this case for your specific itinerary.

that's one heck of a price for a one way to Canada from Europe .. have you checked other airlines?

KLM, Lufthansa, Virgin, British Airways, Thomas Cook ....

I can't believe it's so much for a one way to Canada :s

For a one way from my country, Guyana to Canada, it's less than 500 CDN on a good day and we are about 3000 miles from Canada.

Weird but keep trying to get cheaper flights.

Good luck :D

Do not risk booking a flight going through the USA if you dont have a visa clearance entry of some sort.

Even if you are transiting through the states, you must still go through customs, your bags will come off the plane, and you have to re-check them with the airlines for your next flight. It's a hassle.

I am a Canadian citizen and I occassionally fly via USA to Europe (because it's so much cheaper) but I wouldn't do it if I was coming to land.

If you do decide to do it, obtain a transit visa and MAKE SURE you have at LEAST a 2-3 hours connection in the airport for the bags to come down, go through customs, and check them again.

Good luck :)

If you are non-visa exempt you cannot travel through the US without a transit visa. Even holding a COPR from Canada! You can transit through UK or Netherlands without a transit visa, as long as your 2nd flight leaves within 24 hours.

BTW...we are looking at paying about $2000 cdn for my husband's one-way flight from Nigeria to Edmonton via London.

Hi guys ,thank you for your replies. Air canada via san francisco to vancouver is £429 with 2 x23kg baggage allowance and air transat is almost double with only 20kg baggage,. I will have to search more , has anyone travelled with iceland express? , they cheap but im not sure about their service , and only 30 kg allowance

sorry i was wrong about the transit visa- I think these things have changed since 9/11 - and I'm a US citizen, so I never would have noticed.

But sometimes it's cheaper to buy a round trip ticket, than a one-way ticket - even if you are not ever using the other direction. So you might try that! And who knows, you might want to go back to visit after you receive your PR card!

Just an idea for people looking for flights... I use Expedia.ca whenever I travel to Egypt to see my husband they are always the cheapest and he just got his visa so we have been looking now for one way tickets and Expedia does one way tickets from all over the world and gives you mutiple airline's to choose from.. Most of them travelling through UK, Germany not USA. DO not travel through USA you willhave problems. Expedia is cheaper than even booking directly through the airline websites. June/July/august is high prices everywhere.. if you book for mid september you can save alot of money. Also just keep checking websites as they change daily. Good Luck to all ;)

it's long journeys like these make you wish the world was a bit smaller and everything was somewhat connected ... airline tickets are just too ridiculously priced these days.

I find that when you check for tickets at the beginning of the week or late night you get a better price then you do during the day and approaching the weekend.

Has anyone noticed that?

It's true if you need a visa for the US you will need it for transit too. Even me that I don't need a visa(being italian) i still have to register with them online 72 hs before landing (ESTA program) even for a 5 min. stay in the airport. Once i hadn't registered and they told me that they were doing an exception to let me in because i was travelling with my canadian family(they are the only nationality who doesnt require ESTA). Anyway to make it short don't pass it through the US , you are asking for trouble, unless you have a transit Visa

I was pricing out direct flights for my husband from Sao Paulo, Brazil to Calgary. It was about $1500 one way (with no stopping in US), or $1150 for a return ticket..thought that was a little odd, but it saves $ :)
