First time passport application, do they call guaranters and references

Hi I am applying for my passport for the first time. I will be traveling in 4 weeks, so I'm not sure if I am applying for an express processing, it seems that express is for ppl who want it within 9 bussniness days.

I'm wondering how often they would call the garanteer and the references, if so, what kind of questions do they ask?

My wife & I were references for an applicant. Both of us were called to verify how well we knew the applicant. Similar questions asked. Where they lived, what they did and how long had we known them. This was in 2020, just before the pandemic.
