My father was born in Canada, and moved to the United States in 1971 at which time he renounced his Canadian citizenship. I was born in the US in 1988, during which time my father was technically no longer a Canadian citizen. Do I apply under the first decent rule, even though my father was not a citizen of Canada at my time of birth? Do I apply automatically regardless because he was born in Canada?

I'm wondering if my father renouncing his citizenship prior to my birth affects me applying for Canadian citizenship, even though he was born in Canada. Thank you for your responses.

If he formally renounced his citizenship, then he was not a Citizen at the time of your birth, so you are out of luck.
