First CIC mail contact after sending the application package

I’d like know, on average or according to your personal experience, when we normally expect the first CIC mail (NOT email) contact after sending the application package?

The reason I am asking this is that I am planning to move to a different city 1 or 2 weeks after submitting the application, I will inform CIC my new address once I find a new apartment but I am wondering how likely they will mail me something in the first 1 or 2 weeks.

I saw a post in this forum saying they sometimes ignore your “mailing address” and send stuff to your “home address”, what’s why I am a bit worried.

I was just reading some other posts and noticing that right after CIC receive the application they will send back a letter acknowledging receipt of application, and a study book called Discover Canada.
So the first mail from CIC can be expected only a week or so after submitting the application?

they only send the acknowledgement letter if the application is deemed complete. if not, the application is returned back. that takes from 2 - 3 months.

So you are saying, if I submit my application now and assume it is delivered to the CIC processing center in only 3 days, I would still have to wait an average of 2 to 3 months before receiving the Acknowledgment of Receipt (AoR) and the study book by mail. Correct?

correct. the AOR never comes before the processing starts, even though theoretically it should.

Chel - Depends on your application my friend. They might send back the application to you in the same week or as soon as they receive it (this is assuming your application is not complete or there was an ooopsy in your application). Other people have responded assuming that CIC has determined that all is well with your application. The reason I am saying this is because a friend of mine who submitted application in February got his application returned two times in 3 weeks because of some issues such as pictures not being stamped, signature missing, photocopy not clear etc.... ASSUMING that all is well with your application, expect 2-3 months before you get something AOR (depending on your City of residence).

good luck,

so I guess it would be wise (and safer?) to change address before than after application? because if I change my address 2 weeks after submission, chances are my file will not yet be brought into the CIC system so even if I inform them about the address change there's nothing they can do until 2-3 months later when my file has been setup, correct?

that is what I would do... practically you can update your address online but that will not show up until 2-3 months (so you cannot do that). The Call center might not have any info on your file as well... you can either:

1) set up a forwarding address so that Canada Post will forward your address to your new address (if you get a mail from cic in 2 weeks); or

2) put the new address on the application form. Well, if it is only two weeks before you move out, you can actually put your new address even though you have not moved there yet (but sure that you will move there - only difference would be your Id. will have the old/present address). or

3) wait until you move out to your new place and apply.

Thanks Sept15! I think I will go with option #2.

I don t think it s wise. What if a t a certain stage they ask you for lease. And proof that you ve been living there since xxxxxxx. How would u prouve that you ve been living in your new address before you apply. This is called faulse declaration and lying to cic. Think twice body.
The best think you can do:
1 either stay in touch with your current land lord and if he receives sth he can give u a call or
2 wait till you move and apply.
It s not the end of the World if you delay your application for 2 weeks or even 4.
