I got this in an email.
I live in the USA and am American, my partner is sponsoring me to come to Canada.
I just had a new set of fingerprints taken, do I send them to CIC in Buffalo or to the RCMP???

:(

Dear Applicant,

A fingerprint check is required for ****** please follow the instructions below and send to the Canadian Consulate in Buffalo when you receive the assessed prints.

The Buffalo RPC does not accept RCMP police certificates based on a name check. The RCMP record check that we require must be based on a FINGERPRINT check.

Applicants appearing for fingerprinting will need to bring photo identification.

A fee is normally charged for the fingerprinting service. Fees may vary.

Have your fingerprints taken by your local RCMP detachment or local police service.

For additional instructions, you may wish to contact the RCMP at (613) 998-6362 or on the internet at

http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cr-cj/fing-empr2-eng.htm

IMPORTANT: ENSURE THAT YOUR IMMIGRATION FILE NUMBER AND OUR OFFICE ADDRESS APPEARS ON YOUR FINGERPRINT FORM.

Fingerprints must be forwarded to the RCMP for assessment:

By mail:
RCMP
Civil Fingerprint Screening Services
P.O. Box 8885
Ottawa, ON K1G 3M8
RCMP

By courier:
National Police Services Building, Loading Dock #1
Information and Identification Services
Civil Fingerprint Screening Services
1200 Vanier Parkway
Ottawa, ON K1A 0R2

The RCMP will send the results of your criminal record check to the Canadian Consulate and will not return your fingerprints to you.

You are to send them to the RCMP, ensuring that your file number and the Buffalo office address appears on the form. When RCMP does their check, they will forward the results to Buffalo on your behalf. In other words, YOU won't see the results of the RCMP check (unlike the FBI one), it goes directly to Buffalo from the RCMP.

Assuming you are in Canada and that's why they want an RCMP clearance for you, you can take that letter to any Commissionaires office and they can do a digital fingerprint scan, which gets the prints to the RCMP within 72 hours. It's a much faster option than having ink prints done and sending them yourself to the RCMP - that can take up to 4 months to get your clearance processed.
