Hi everyone,
My common-law boyfriend and I have a common-law sponsorship application in process. As such, would you recommend that we file our taxes as a common law or as singles?

What date did you officially become common-law on?

If you became common-law in 2013 then you would file as single for 2012.

However if it was anytime in 2012, then you MUST file as common-law for your 2012 taxes. This is not a choice, as it is considered tax fraud to file as single when you are in fact common-law.
