Sponsoring outland via Buffalo. Applicant resident in Canada on Temporary Resident Visa. Permit expires June 15, 2010. Extension sent via FedEx overnight courier 9 am on May 13, 2010, to arrive at Vegreville on May 14, 2010 by 9am.

Although we used a waybill for within Canada and very clearly had a Canadian postal code (and Canadian city for that matter) FedEx sent our package to Tennessee.

Incidentally, when we called them they tried to tell us that "overnight priority" meant it could take up to 5 days. After we pointed out that our Canadian package was in Tennessee and were very clear that the counter staff had told us our package would arrive by Friday morning, they accepted that they made an error. They tell us the visa extension app will be delivered on Monday May 17 (and they will refund our money). I understand mistakes are sometimes made but their attempt to cover it up was not cool. I will never use them again.

Anyway, here's the point: On May 17 it will be 29 days prior to the expiry of the visa, not the required 30 days.

What will happen to the application? Will it be rejected for being one day late? We were prepared for it to be rejected if they think he would overstay (although since he's already here that doesn't make a lot of sense to me), but if it's rejected because FedEx hasn't figured out where Alberta is I'm going to freak out.

30 days is a "suggestion" by CIC, there is nothing in the Act or Regulations. As long as you applied before your permit expired, you are fine.

They make it sound like 30 days is required but it's merely recommended. As long as they receive it the day before the expiry, you're okay. In fact, the announcement of the solution to the recent computer downtime implied that you only need to have the request postmarked before the time allowed for the visit expires, but I wouldn't personally risk that.

Really? Where did it state this?

Oh and glad someone said something about the fedex thing. Makes me realize unless someone in the states is sending me something then I don't want to mail fedex especially if it is supposed to be mailed within Canada and I know that other mail couriers could get it there soon.

Also, with my first extension request, I went by the "30 day" suggestion and got approved. Then my second request I mailed on January 7, 2010 when my visitor record was to expire on January 31, 2010. As suggested, the 30 days is recommended but not a requirement. My second request got approved and went through just as smoothly so the date didn't interfere with the approval. As long as you have tracking on it and have proof that it was received before the expiry then I believe you will be fine. Though for future suggestion, I would still try to at least send it within the first week of the month it is due to expire or the second week at the latest.

Just like PMM said And packages mailed in the us through fed ex stay in canada anything going anywhere else is routed through memphis.Canada does there own fed ex routing. It was just a mistake it went to memphis.
If you send fed ex to the states or any other country it goes to Memphis if your mailing it in Canada to Canada it goes to the sorting house on Kipling Road in Etobicoke Ontario.
Even if you are mailing it From Alberta to Alberta it first goes on the Fed Ex plane to Toronto is sorted then goes back on a plane to Alberta?????? who knows why but that is how they do it i use to haul Fed Ex.

On the "CIC Online Services" page for requesting an extension online: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english//e-services/epass.asp As I understand it, the MyCIC service was down for some time, possibly weeks. It's back up now (I just used it), but this note has been added (emphasis mine):

Access to MyCIC is now available. Please note that if you have already submitted a paper application, there is no need to resubmit an electronic application.

For those renewing their status, if a paper application has already been submitted to CIC and was postmarked prior to the date your status expired, you will be considered to have implied status. If you submitted a paper application after your status expired, your explanation will be considered and restoration fees refunded if they are deemed to be a result of MyCIC access unavailability. There is no need to resubmit an electronic application.

Thank you for sharing this BeShoo. I am certain many people will find that information useful.
I have a question about applying online.
How do you attach documents? Also, is there a limit?
I have submitted two previously but that was before the online application.

Any other tips for applying online would be useful too. Thanks.
