Earlier it was recommended to pay 1 year fee at least (irrespective of the duration of the program, for example even if the program is of three years) + 1 year living cost.

Effective May 2013, you are good to go with 1 semester fee at least and 1 year's living cost. Paying 1 year fee or two year fee doesn't strengthen your case. For example if I apply and pay 2 years fee (which I can very well and college/cic doesn't stop me from doing it) but then my over all profile is weak, it doesn't help me.

If you are applying under SPP, you need to pay at least 1 semester fee + GIC. You need not even show funds for second semester. It's not even required. Check the SPP checklist.

best of luck.

so depositing 1 sem fee + 10,000 gic won'nt cause any problem in getting visa? and its there is no compulsion for depositing 1 year fee....?

because it shows the candidate does have funds to commit to education and r not funds just borrowed from friends or family to just boost ur bank balance temporarily. yes there may be cases where people would withdraw and send funds back but chances r low compared to funds withdrawn from bank and returned in home country....system is not perfect as people can always find loop holes.

let me add just little bit more than what mead said.... now, most of the colleges do not transfer your funds to another college you join after landing here. They (most) transfer funds to the account from where funds first originated. Now, it doesn't mean party time. To withdraw from college, you need to have LOA from another participating SPP college/uni along with fee receipt of at least one semester. Hence, things have got bit difficult and all thanks to us. Also, moving forward, (as speculated in one of the changes to be implemented from January 2014, mark my work speculated), student won't be allowed to switch college. They will have to study in the same college/uni for which they were approved for. So things will get more difficult. Now, another agony is; moving forward, CIC will keep a close look on students (as at the moment, they aren't in a position to monitor students switching, dropping semesters) and yeah that reminds me of another proposed change (which is not yet implemented), effective 2014, students won't be allowed to drop semester just like that as people used to do before just to earn money.

So welcome to Canada. Things changed in the past and will change in the future, things will be tough for future students and all credit goes to past students.

Cheers!

Very nice explanation! You convince me to pay my first semester tuition, even though I'm not obliged to do so. 8)
