Family sponsorship from Study permit

My fiancé has been studying in Canada for the last 3 years. Her study permit is set to expire at the end of the month, and due to some extreme unforeseen circumstances it does not look like she will be accepted if she attempts to renew it. We have been living together for several years and check all the requirements to be considered common law. We are currently in a bit of a panic and would like to know if we submit the application for spousal sponsorship before her study permit expires, can she stay in Canada to wait for the process to be complete or are there other steps she must also take?

You can apply to sponsor her inland. Include an open work permit application with the inland sponsorship application so that she can remain in Canada.

In addition to the above, apply to change her status from study permit to visitor visa before her study permit expires at the end of the month. Indicate the reason for this application is that she is going to apply for PR through spousal sponsorship inland.
