Family Class Sponsorship and Health Insurance

Hey everyone!

I have a question regarding health insurance when applying for in-Canada common-law partner sponsorship. First of all, a little information about my background:

My common-law partner is Canadian citizen and moved back to Ontario recently. Before that we lived together in Germany (I'm German citizen). I want to follow her soon and apply for an in-Canada common-law partner sponsorship once I arrive in Ontario (probably at the very beginning of 2018). At the same time, I want to apply for OWP. Once this is approved, I want to start to work.

I was wondering about health insurance. Some questions that came to my mind:

• When arriving at the airport, will they question me about my health insurance?
• When applying for sponsorship, do I have to show proof of a health insurance?
• Are there some regulations on which health insurance I need specifically?
• Will it be sufficient to keep my German health insurance? Do I need a Canadian one?
• Would it even be possible to become a member of the Canadian health care plan?

Any thought and help on this is much appreciated.

No, they won't ask about health insurance.

No, you don't have to show proof of health insurance when applying for PR.

No.

If your German insurance will fully cover you in Canada, they by all means, keep it. However, if it doesn't or if the coverage isn't very good, you should really get some travel insurance before coming to Canada.

As a visitor, no. As a PR applicant, possibly; I believe some people have appealed to OHIP and received coverage while waiting for PR. Otherwise, once you have the OWP and a full-time job, you would be eligible.

Just some additional advice. I know that in Canada medical insurance for out of country provided by employers/insurance companies will only cover you for a limited amount of time 30/90 days. So make sure to read your policy documents before coming to make sure.
You can also buy travel insurance through an insurance agent while in Canada if you need some extension of coverage.
