Yes. LMOs are only good for 6 months.

hi I have the same querry my work permit is about to expire in the next few months and my employer gave me an arrange employment letter for which I had used for my PR pplication..My worry is that since CIC is going slow for today im afraid that my work permit would expire before my PR app...be approved...Do yu have any suggestions for this...lets say I dont have an lmo approved can I still apply for extension?thanks.

No, you need a new LMO to apply for the work permit extension. Without one, you would have to apply for status as a visitor.

thanks PMM...I had been searching the web if I could find something that would mention the requirements and/or steps in applying from work permit to visitors but nothing could match what im looking for..i wonder if you know how to apply for one..Thanks..

Visitors can't apply in Canada for work permits. If eligible they can apply at Port of Entry on admission or an overseas office. Unless the job is LMO exempt, your employer has to obtain a Labour Market Opinion from HRSDC that there are no Canadians/PRs available for the job and they have advertised on the job bank for 2 weeks.
