Is asking for another year or so to become common law often refused?
Depends on your specifics.

How so? I have been with this girl for two years and I am from a visa exempt country, if I asked for a year is it likely to be rejected?

Then that should be OK. This is a common thing between people who want to reach common law criteria.

Would it be better to leave Canada for a few months first then come back and start over from there?
It wouldn't make sense. If you are persuing common law, then interrupting the relationship for "a few months" goes against it.

Well to see family and spend time with them before I am away. As we have not started the process it shouldn't set us back I would think. Is this still a bad route to go though?

If you are willing to reset the counter, then it is fine.

Hi! I was reading this post and I am trying to get some help with something. I am applying for an extension on my Visitor Visa (I got married, sent application for sponsorship and want to stay here until its approved).
The form has a section called COMING INTO CANADA, where they ask:
1. date and place of your original entry to Canada - I gave the first time I came here.
2. Original purpose for coming to Canada - Here's when I am having doubts.
When I applied for my Visitor visa (Online), I said my purpose was Tourism and gave hotel reservation, itinerary, etc.
I had my boyfriend (current husband) here, but he didn't know I was applying so I didn't ask for letter or anything and that's why I said Tourism, but I was actually coming to see him....

so... for this extension, on this question: "Original purpose for coming to Canada"... should I say: TOURISM? or OTHER: Visit boyfriend (current husband)?

Thanks in advance
