Hello Guys, My wife and I have been residing in Canada since November 2023. We both hold open work permits (OWP) valid until September 2026, which we obtained through the special program "TS2023" for Turkish citizens. We also have a newborn child who is a Canadian citizen.

Currently, I am employed full-time as an Alarm Technician. I am seeking information on how to extend my OWP. I understand that the application process is conducted through the GCKey system. However, I would like to know the specific requirements and steps necessary to qualify for an extension of my OWP.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

If valid until 2026 then why extend now. You are not eligible to extend unless government introduces new policy to do so.

I am currently gathering information on the process for extending my Open Work Permit (OWP) when the time comes not now . But you are saying that Based on my understanding, it appears that there may not be an option to extend my OWP unless the government introduces a new policy under the "TS2023" program.

what about whether my status as a full-time employee and my contribution to the Canadian economy will have any impact on my eligibility for an extension?

Having a job and contributing doesn’t let you extend your work permit. Canada needs to extend the current program or get an approved LMIA from employer to apply for a closed work permit or apply for PR and get invited.

The special Turkish program was always mean to be a temporary program with no guarantees of being able to remain in Canada. Sadly due to lax enforcement many used it as an easy way to get a WP not understanding that this may not lead to the ability to stay in Canada longterm. Having a Canadian born child does not guarantee that parents can stay in Canada. Unless you work in certain fields and/or have a high CRS score and/or are fluent in French PR may be very difficult to secure as Canada tries to scale down immigration numbers.
