Hi all,

I am a student at the University of Toronto finishing my final year of studies, as well as a Permenant Resident of Canada. My fiance has decided to take a year off work to spend time with me in Canada. We are both holders of a Singapore passport, which allows her entry into Canada for 6 months as a visa-exempt visitor.

However, my final year of studies will take up to approximately 11 months to complete before we both return to Singapore to get married. May I kindly know what are our options to stay for the full 11 months? I understand that it is possible to apply for an extension of her stay 30 days prior to expiry and the conditions are for financial ability as well as accomodation. She will be staying with me for the entire 11 months and her savings are more than enough to support her extended stay here.

Currently, she has booked a one-way ticket to Toronto and we depart in late August 2013. Hope to get some advice, thanks a bunch.

Hey, is anyone able to answer my query? I understand it is similar to most other posts regarding extension of visas, but I'm wondering if me being a student will impact the decision making process..

1. The one way ticket is not a good idea.
2. If she comes as a visitor and is admitted for 6 months, then a month before her status expires, she applies for an extension of her visitor status.

Thanks for the reply! The one way ticket is because we haven't decided where we want to travel to after my graduation. Will this impact her chances of getting through?

Hi,

I would definitely recommend taking a return ticket. One way ticket is never a good idea.

I have just been to Vancouver and the first thing I was asked by the immigration officer was my return ticket !!

Cheers

They might not even let her on the plane with a one way ticket, get a changeable ticket and pay the fare difference. Usually they require proof of citizenship or PR for a one way ticket to Canada.

Also she might not get 6 months. If they write a date below the stamp that is when she needs to be out of the country by or have applied for an extension by.

Thanks everyone for your help so far.

If we were to purchase a one-way return ticket which is dated for a day past her visitor visa period, is that possible?
