Extension of Stay awaiting - can we travel out of Canada and re-enter?

question: if you have already applied for an Extension of Stay, but have to leave Canada while they are still processing it (which can take up to 4-5 months), is it possible to reenter Canada by applying for a tourist visa (TRV) from your home country?
Has anyone done that?

Yes - you can certainly try to do that.

As soon as you leave Canada, this will effectively cancel the extension application.

You can then apply for a new TRV from outside of Canada. Of course as always, no guarantee of approval.
