Extension for stay in Canada?

I was just wondering how long and what processes would be needed to extend my fiance's stay here in Canada. He's a Spanish citizen who has been in Canada for a month as of today, however we are planning to be married within the month of September and apply for inland PR via sponsorship during that time as well. He's scheduled to head back to Spain soon unless we can be sure to extend his stay for at least 12 months. We've done searching but since he is a Spanish citizen he did not need a visitor visa so we're unsure as to how to apply for an extension for him to stay during this long process.

Thank you in advance for your answers!

He was admitted in Canada (TRV or not) for a certain period of time (if not explicit then 6 months). You apply for "Extend your stay as a visitor" and complete the checklist, submit the application and wait for decision.

What is exactly the confusion? Are there any specific questions regarding the process? Why don't you try to start the process and then if any questions arise we can discuss them?
