Extending visitor visa

Hi everyone
My father is going to visit me in March 2015 and his visitor visa is valid till April 2015. I just want to know that can he extend his stay as a tourist from within Canada. Currently I am on work permit and doing a permanent full time job.
If it is possible to extend the visa, then what are the documents required for it from me and from my father side.

You can only extend a VISITOR STATUS within Canada. It wouldn't make sense to try to extend it elsewhere.

No. Visas can't be extended, visas are renewed and you would have to apply out of Canada.



A TRV (visitor visa) is a sticker in your passport. A visitor status is what is granted at point of entry when you present your TRV. Don't confuse them.

Your father can indeed extend his VISITOR STATUS even though his TRV is expired. Use the tool to determine what documentation will be needed, fill in the blanks as if you were applying now, that would be enough to know what to prepare in advance:

Thanks Jalex for the help, one thing more I just want to know that when my father will apply for extending the stay he has to show the proof of financial support, can he then attach the bank statements of their home country? Also can I attach my bank statements, pay stubs, job letter also as a means of financial support with his application?

Yes when your father apply for an extension to stay in canada he will be submitting proof of finances to show that he has sufficient funds/support during his stay in canada. you can/must attach or upload both; his bank statement and your financial documents with your payslips etc to support his application.

At least 30 days before his status expires. TRV has no effect on this.

His TRV is only used for entry purposes.

generally it is recommended that extensions should be applied at least 30 days before the current stay expiry but the extension application is acceptable if it is received by cic the day before your current expiry. Once you apply for extension the applicant can stay in canada and will have an implied status till the outcome of the application. if approved the applicant will receive a visitor record and continue to stay till the visitor record expires, in case of rejection the applicant will have to leave the country.

If the visa issued is single entry visa then is it necessary to buy the return ticket also. (In case of India)

Yes it is. They have to buy return tickets. And the returning date should be before the single visa expiry date.
