My brother in law has been in Canada since October and has 6 months before having to return ad possible come back in the future. We will like to extend his stay (has 2 years visa on his passport). Wondering if anyone has extended successfully during this period of immigration changes with a lot of new rules and uncertainty. What are reasons he can give for extending in his application. We have two kids (10 ad 8) and myself and my wife a re working professionals. Truly speaking, he has been of help in a new things/chores at home. Will this be a valid reason to present to IRCC?

So he is working for you illegally without a work permit. No it is not a valid reason. He applies to extend his stay as a visitor showing he has the cash in his bank account to support himself. He may get another 6 months.

Unless he has quite a lot of savings tough to justify how a man of working age can just visit Canada for 6+ months. Even 6 months is tough to justify for most. There will be concern he is working illegally which it appears he is doing. If he would like to visit Canada in the future, especially given his TRV expires in 2 years, best option is probably to return home.

Thanks everyone. Interesting, so helping us will be viewed as working illegally? Hmm, thanks for the enlightenment. @canuck78 can we say that we will further support him - he is staying in a room in our house.

You can confirm that he has a place to live for free but he really needs to show his own funds as well as explain why someone of working age is able to visit Canada for such a long time. The longer he stays the more there will be concerns that he is working illegally.

He needs his own funds. He has been in Canada a long time with no job, not going to school and no reasons to return home. Plus, he is working for you.
