Hello, apparently I am confused on this whole process. I was looking to become a Common Law partner with my girlfriend from Canada, I am from America. I would like to know how I can extend my stay there so I can meet a year requirement of living together. Also, how long can I extend for. Thank you! :)

Hi

You apply to extend your status here http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/extend-stay.asp. If you are trying to become common-law, ask for a year. You will need to show proof of finances to support your extended stay.

Okay I understand, since we are young could we use her mothers and her mothers boyfriends bank statements and my parents as proof of support? Also, since our situation, I can not sign on her lease until March, so could I stay there to visit until March, and then ask for a year from March 2017-2018? Also, could I extend a second time? or ask for more then a year?

Yes, include letters of support and bank statements from your family.

A joint lease is not required to apply as common-law, so there is absolutely no reason to wait until March 2018. Start getting mail at that address, get added to the utilities, open a bank account and get statements, get a phone and get bills sent etc. You can include letters from family/friends/neighbors stating when you started living together; you will need 2 Statutory Declarations attesting to this anyways.

Well, we can not necessarily live together until March, because that would be going against her lease agreement. So I will be living with her relative who lives very close until I can live with her in March. I mean, I could get on to utility bills and a Joint bank account, but I wouldn't necessarily be living with her, but being there absolutely as much as possible. but from March on, I could be living with her, so only a half of a year living together "officially" I am confused and need some helpers :( thank you for your time :)!

I thought you were already living together. Where does she live? Is she not able to get permission for you to live there?

If you can't move in with her until March, then yes, you will need to wait until March 2018 to apply

well no I can not move in with her, apparently they wont let me sign on the lease till she is 19, (British Columbia) but I want to stay near there until then. Is it likely I could stay up there until march, and extend my stay until march 2018? would they accept that?

Who won't let you you sign on until she is 19? Is this a family member or a private landlord or government housing?

No one can guarantee that you will be able to stay. Generally, as long as you can show proof of funds, it should be fine.

She is renting from a private apartment owner, apparently they said she is too young to have people sign onto the lease? IDK, but yeah. I am just worried I will get denied when I apply for a extra year in march :(
