A friend of mine entered Canada as a tourist and he just found a job that provide work permit.
He has been here for 4 months now and since there's a processing time(in my case it took me 3 months to get the work permit) we were wondering what should he do.
Cause his tourist visa is good for 6 months, so if he stays in Canada and waiting for his work permit does he have to extend his tourist visa?
And if so, what should be his reason for that? Should he say 'I'd like to extend my tourist visa cause I'm waiting for my work permit' or should he lie and say that he wants to travel some more?
He's staying at my place now he's a friend from back home, he worked really hard to get this job and he wants to stay here and wait for his work permit.

What should he do?

Thanks.

Once he applies for the work permit, he is on implied status. This gives him the benefit of the doubt that he'll get the work permit and be allowed to stay. (He can't work yet though.)

However, if he's denied the work permit, he will need to leave immediately.

He can ask for a visitors extension too, so if he is denied, he will have time to reapply or look for another job. Personally, I always stay in Status. No Implied Status. I prefer having the paper with my official status as opposed to copies of an application. Your friend can do either, but he should consider how strong his work permit application is. (I.e. how qualified he is for the job.)

If he hasn't submitted the work permit application yet, he needs to submit either that or the visitor extension at least 30 days before his status expires.

1. The OP's friend is a visitor, so there is no implied status if he applies for a work permit, since he will have to apply to either an office outside Canada or a border office is eligible. He can't apply in Canada.
2. If he wants to remain longer he has to apply for a visitor extension.
