Hi everyone,

I’m in the Express Entry pool under CEC with a score of 505 and planning to go back to India while waiting for my ITA. After submitting my profile, I’m also thinking about getting married and adding my spouse later.

  • How long does it take to process the application if I’m in India vs. staying in Canada?
  • Should I stay in Canada, or is it okay to go to India and add my spouse after?
  • Will adding my spouse delay my PR process or affect my CRS score?
Looking for advice. Thanks!

No idea about the Canada bit but adding your spouse will not impact your CRS once you receive AOR. In our case, we were asked some pretty detailed questions about the religious/cultural circumstances of our wedding and history of relationship. You can get married at any time before landing in Canada, my partner had her COPR in hand by the time we reported our wedding. Had to return the passport/COPR for cancellation. The process was very fast, probably just a couple of months. We got requests for spousal addition kit, proof of funds, biometrics, and medical within one or two days after finishing the previous step.

Thank you for sharing your experience. After submitting the web form, what documents do they usually ask for? Apart from proof of funds, biometrics, and medicals, is there anything else I should be ready for? Thanks again!

Police clearance for the spouse, photos of your relationship over the years, and a lengthy questionnaire for both you and your spouse to fill out. Make sure you take enough photos at your wedding, even if it's only at the marriage registrar, and bring along a handful of family and friends. If you will have a reception, that's easier. They asked us for celebration photos and written details.
