I would like to move to Montréal for six months to see if I would like to live there long term. I'm a writer and I am accumulating enough money to be able to pay my own way for a year.

Does anyone know if I can do this on a standard Tourist Visa (I'm American by birth)? Or do I need to apply for PR status? If I do like living there, my long-term goal is to emigrate and eventually apply for citizenship. If not, I'll head back to the States. I realize that I may have an uphill battle because Québec's laws are different and I'm not in one of the scientific fields that would make me a priority.

Any help appreciated.

All visitors have to meet certain criteria.
Note: As a visitor you cannot "move" here, but you can visit.

As a US citizen you can visit Canada for six months.
When you are in Canada you can apply to extend your stay.

There are no guarantees of entry at the Port of Entry (the IO decides if you are allowed in).
There is no guarantee that you will be allowed to stay.

Read about visiting - here http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/index.asp

Thank you very much for your assistance. I'm afraid I found CIC's website a little bewildering. :)

Deal with it ;D
Because you will live on that site (and this) if you want to immigrate to Canada.
