Explaining relationship gaps

Hi there,

My partner (sponsor) and I have been in common-law relationship for over 5 years. In the past year however, we have had two 2 month gaps in our relationship where I had to go back to my home country to prevent overstaying my TRV as well as for family obligations. Is this a decent enough answer to use when explaining the gaps or should I avoid mentioning the part about the TRV?

I think you should be as honest as possible. Given them all the information upfront by writing a letter explaining this. You did the right thing by not overstayed your TRV and it is perfectly acceptable (and normal!) to want to go back home and visit family! If you ignore gaps it may raise suspicion, is I would just be honest! Hoe that helps!

When you say relationship gap, do you mean that you actually ended your relationship during that time period, or that you simply weren’t living together but were still in a relationship? Once you live together for twelve consecutive months, you are considered common law, and you do not lose that status if you later have to travel or live apart. So I wouldn’t use the word “gap” because it implies otherwise. A simple short explanation that your TRV was up and you had to leave, exactly like you said, will suffice.

Thanks for both of your help! We were still in a relationship just not living together.
