Hi,

My passport expires in January 2020 and I just received the study permit approval. It mentions that the visa will not be stamped beyond the expiry on my passport.
  • What exactly does this mean?
  • Will I have to reapply for the visa all over again once I get my new passport?
  • I intend to travel out of Canada during the winter break. What exactly will I need besides an Unexpired passport to enter the country?
Thank you very much.

1. The visa and study permit that you'll get will only be valid till Jan 2020.
2. Yes, if you want to travel in and out of Canada, you'll need a new TRV.
3. A new TRV, valid study permit, and a valid passport.

You will need to apply for your new passport, get it, and then apply for an extension to your study permit once you have landed in Canada.

1. The visa that you'll get will only be valid till Jan 2020. The study permit (this is not the same thing as the visa) will be valid for the period of your studies.
2. Yes, if you want to travel in and out of Canada, you'll need a new TRV.
3. A new TRV, valid study permit, and a valid passport.

The study permit will grant you status while you're in Canada, so if you enter before your passport expires, you can live here till the expiry date printed on the study permit, even after your visa expires. However, if you need to travel out of Canada (as you do), you'll need to get a new visa stamped in your passport.
Thank you so much for explaining! :)

  • Can I apply for the new TRV & visa while I am in Canada?

I'll be reaching Toronto on the 8th and I'm planning to carry a new passport with me from here. I'd like to apply for the new visa in September as I am guessing it will take several months and I'll need it before Dec 15th, 2019 in order to travel.

Thanks again!

The study permit will grant you status while you're in Canada, so if you enter before your passport expires, you can live here till the expiry date printed on the study permit (as long as you meet the conditions of the study permit - continuing to study, etc), even after your visa expires. However, if you need to travel out of Canada (as you do), you'll need to get a new visa stamped in your passport.
1. You are incorrect, the study permit will only be issued to the date of the expiry of the passport. The OP will need to extend the passport and then extend the study permit.

I stand corrected, thank you.
