Expired Student visa on old passport

Hi Everyone,

My friend got new passport recently, however he has a valid Canadian student visa on his old passport ( valid until July 2020 ). He is planning to travel outside Canada for sometime and return after a month. Does he require to transfer the Canadian Student visa to his new passport OR he can carry both ( old & new ) passports with him while entering back to Canada ?

Secondly, Would he also require a study permit to enter Canada ?

He needs to carry both passports. Assuming his status is student, he should have his study permit.
