Hi. I got PR about 4 years ago. After getting PR, I came to Canada for a month & took my PR Card. Then I returned to my country. After few months I got married & stayed with my wife in my country. About 3 months ago I returned to Canada & got a job. Now I want to sponsor my my wife who is living in my country.

Since I'm not likely to cover minimum stay requirement at the end of five year of PR, will that be a problem while I sponsor my wife? Will I put myself in the risk of of losing my own PR status? What should I do in such situation?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Your sponsorship application will not be approved if you cannot maintain your PR status. If you are a permanent resident, you may sponsor your spouse. According to CIC, effective October 25, 2012, sponsored spouses or partners must now live together in a legitimate relationship with their sponsor for two years from the day they receive permanent residence status in Canada.

hi wilson..thanks.

i've lived with my wife in my country more than two years. Even then my sponsorship will not be approved?
You won't have any problems sponsoring your wife from this perspective.

Where you do have a problem is in the fact that you don't meet residency requirements. If you submit a sponsorship application before meeting PR residency requirements, it's entirely possible CIC will do a check, see you don't mee residency requirements and possibly start proceedings to revoke your PR status. You need to wait until you meet residency requirements before you sponsor your wife.

hi Godzilla9 ..thanks.

i was not sponsored. i got PR of my own.
What I mean is that if you do not meet residency requirements when your PR card expires, they will not extend your PR status and you will need to leave Canada. In this case, your wife will not be able to sponsor you because she will be sponsored person, and sponsored persons cannot sponsor for 5 years.

Wrong. Doesn't work that way. The 5 year rule only applies if you were sponsored by one spouse and now want to sponsor someone new.

I think the order of things is confusing here...

OP wants to sponsor his spouse. There's a chance he can before his PR expires (PR residency requirements aside for now). Sponsorship for OP's wife is approved, wife is PR. Huzzah.

Then OP loses his PR status because of inability to meet the residency requirements. Sad times.

OP's wife *CANNOT* sponsor OP at that point because OP's wife herself was a sponsor - she will have to wait 5 years before she can sponsor the OP to get his PR back.

I think that's what was trying to be explained...
