Hello.

Here's my situation..

My boyfriend and I are planning to get married some time this year in the US. We are both from the Philippines but he is now living in Canada as a PR. After our wedding, we will launch our Outland application immediately. I'll head home and apply for a TRV so I can visit him while waiting for my interview/passport request.

Of course, once I get my interview date/passport request, I'll be heading home to the Philippines again and wait there for my visa until I can finally fly to Canada as a PR myself.

Do I have a good chance of being granted a TRV? Your comments and suggestions will be highly appreciated.

It's difficult to say. Normally I would say your chances are low because tourist visas are meant for people who only plan to visit Canada short term and have no plans to stay long term (spouses of Canadians are often refused TRVs for this reason).

However if you have a history of international travel and can show ties to the Philippines (e.g. job, property) - then it's entirely possible you may be approved.

Not just for Canada but for most countries, applying under a visit visa category as a spouse is not accepted. Better to go down the spouse visa route.

So even if I have a legitimate reason to come back after my visit like an interview or passport request, my chances are still slim? That sucks. I wouldn't want to ruin my chances if getting a PR and be with my loved one by staying in Canada longer than I should.

Oh well.. It's just difficult to spend so much time apart but I can always try. ;D

Those reasons aren't going to help your application. If anything, they prove even more strongly that you aren't a genuine tourist but have plans on remaining in Canada long term.

Applying for a visitor visa once and being refused isn't going to impact your PR application. By all means go ahead and try applying once - you may get lucky.

Hi, everyone.

I went ahead and applied for a TRV. My fiancé wrote an invitation letter explaining my purpose of visiting Canada and I, too, wrote a letter of explanation. We clearly stated that by the time I will enter Canada, we will already be married. And surprise, surprise... I got approved. Just got back my passport yesterday.

In my letter of explanation, I stated my ties to the Philippines, including my family, job and a piece of land I own. Contrary to what others advised, I even stated as one of my reasons for coming back that my fiancé and I "intend to launch an outland spousal sponsorship" and that I wouldn't do anything to jeopardize my chances of becoming a permanent resident in Canada by violating my TRV visa conditions.

So there you go.. It helps a lot to be honest and be completely transparent with your reasons. I hope this gives others out there, who just wish to spend time with their spouses, some hope.

Btw, just in case it confuses you.. We're not married yet. We decided to apply for a TRV first so I can just cross over to Canada after our wedding. ;D
