I'm helping my mum to apply for Canadian citizenship by descent.
Her father was born in Canada and we have his Canadian birth certificate. He and his parents then moved to the UK. Before they left Canada they changed their surname (looking at the paperwork they seemed to change their first and surnames to slightly different variations and different family surnames, apparently at the time to help secure work?) and the records from the ship they emigrated on show them entering the UK with their new surname.
He continued using this new surname so the name of my mum's father on her birth certificate doesn't match the name on his own Canadian birth certificate.
There are other documents that show the 'new' surname is actually another family surname, but I can't find any official documents to confirm there was any kind of official name change.
Does anyone have any advice regarding how to convince CIC that despite the name change the baby on the Canadian birth certificate/father on my mum's birth certificate are the same person?
Or if someone did officially change their name in Ontario in the early 1930s, where would I look to find some evidence of this? Is there somewhere I can look at old records etc?
Thanks!
