Hi, I'm Swedish and I was last in Canada 10 years ago. I have applied for a visitor visa to Canada to visit my son. I have a permanent residency permit, but it expired 10 years ago. I applied for a visitor visa, but they said that I must cancel my permanent resident status in Canada. I have filled out a form for them to cancel my PR status, but I haven't received a response yet its been 10 days. Now I'm a bit nervous because I'm leaving in 6 days and still haven't received any response and I don't know who to contact. I paid for my flight already.

The message I got was "
If you do not meet Canada’s permanent residency obligation, for example, you have lived outside of Canada for a long period of time, you can apply to voluntarily give up (renounce) your PR status. This would clear up your PR status and allow you to continue with your eTA application.
If you apply to give up your PR status within the next 10 days, we will automatically continue processing your eTA application. However, if we do not receive your application to give up your PR status within 10 days, your eTA application will be closed and you will need to apply again if you decide you want to renounce your PR status

What form did you fill out? Did they give instructions? So did you send in the forms via mail? All this says is that if you don’t send forms to renounce PR within 10 days, your ETA file is closed/cancelled.

So you filled out the form. You can try to apply again. Usually renouncing PR takes 5-6 months and you apply via paper but maybe they changed the rules.

Also the email says they will continue to process ETA but doesn’t mean it will be completed in a few hours or days. It may takes months.

Right. It says “automatically continue processing” but doesn’t say how long the processing and a final decision could take. IT doesn’t say that it will be processed within 10 days. That is all I am saying because renouncing PR usually takes around 5-6 months to process. Hopefully you get a decision quickly.

This response from IRCC means that they will continue processing your eTA if you apply to give up your PR status within the next 10 days however the message doesn't mean that your eTA will be approved in 10 days. Unfortunately it's not possible for any of us to say how much lonter you may be waiting for the eTA approval. You could certainly get it in time for your trip or it may take longer.

You basically have two options:
1) Wait and hope the eTA is approved in time
2) Reroute your trip to fly to the US (using an ESTA) and then enter Canada through a land border using a private vehicle.

Good luck.

It could go either way. Your eTA may be approved in time or it may not be.
