Hi!

An Icelandic friend of mine has a visa exemption due to her citizenship, and is elligible for an eTA.

Does the eTA mean my friend can stay in Canada for up to 5 years? Can she work while in Canada with only an eTA? Are the eTA and a valid passport the only forms/requirements to stay in Canada for months/years?

Thanks!

An ETA is only an authority to board a plane for Canada nothing else. It is valid for 5 years but gives no entry rights nor work rights or residency rights.

Once at the Canadian border all visitors are subject to assessment and usually visitors will only be permitted to enter for upto 6 months at any one visit.

Anything else and your friend would need to find an employer to sponsor an LMIA for a work permit, or apply for study permit or emigrate on a permenant basis to stay more than 6 months/ years.
