Hello everyone and congratulations for your forum. This is Konstantinos from Athens, Greece and I am here to ask you a few questions about finding a job in Canada. Especially, for Entry Level Electrical Engineering.

I will try to come in Canada in 2015 (I will be 27 years old) with the IEC program. I think it will open in January of 2015. 99% I will be in the Working Holiday Category. So, I will come in Canada for holiday, and I will try to find a job.

About me, I have (fresh graduated - 2014) a 5-year-diploma (300 ECTS) of Electrical and Computer Engineering from National Technical University of Athens.

My scientific interests are the following: Robotics, Control Systems, Programmable Logic Controllers, Power Electronics and Electrical Machines. I know very well these subjects in theory, but I do not have any work experience.

So, I want to begin my career (Entry Level) in Canada.

What is your opinion? Does my plan have any chances? Will I be able to find work in Canada? In the beginning, I know, that officially I will not work as an engineer, and many years will be required for becoming PEngineer. Can you give me advice on what exactly I should do in order to find job in Canada? How easy is it to find work before coming, with interview on skype?

Generally speaking, is there a chance not to find any job in Canada, and so I will have survival problem?

Thank you in advance.

Hello Konstantinos,
try as much as you can to gain some work experience (in your field) while in Athens. Perhaps you will be able to transfer some of that skill here. Employers generally don't like to spend money and time training recent graduates with no work experience. They like recent graduates with work experience so they can hit the ground and running.

Not to discourage you but they are International students who completed their degree in Canada, but with no work experience have to keep looking for work as no employer is willingly to hire anyone with no experience. By experience I mean any Industrial experience while in school, a coop or internship position.

You might also want to check in with the governing body that regulates the Engineering profession in Canada. Each province has it own depending on where to you choose land. They will evaluate your degree from Athens based on Canadian standards. See Apega, Apegm on google for example.

I also wrote a great deal on finding work for international students on my blog and the "Finding Work in Canada" thread. Look for " Job Search for International Students (before and after graduation)"

They are lots of recent graduates with no work experience. You have to over come this by simply networking and talking to people.

Don't feel discouraged by the way. That is only my opinion. You might want to take suggestions from any other person here first before you make your final decision.
